Days 8 & 9: Cauterets & Toulouse

February 21, 2011 by Steve Leave a Comment

July 17 & 18

There are towns in France you’ve never heard of in which you’d be more than happy to spend a week. Cauterets in the high Pyrenees on the Spanish border is one such town. It’s ridiculously beatiful and the odd Basque/Spanish/French mix of foods and cultures makes it a fascinating place.

It’s also famous for its geothermal spas. Now, Hoang and I spent most of the day in town but never got a spa treatment. Why? Because the Cauterets spas are famous for being fueled by sulphur springs. They reek. In fact, that whole side of the town reeks like rotten eggs. No thanks.

We drove back east out of the mountains and into Toulouse. We spent the entire next day here, doing laundry, sending email and generally catching up on life for a day. The giant square was remarkable – as was eating dinner alongside it at 11 PM.
