The Dirty Derb

Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy
Dirty Derby Roads, Derby

December 2024

***Warning!*** Not the usual CTMQ content. You can guess from the title of the page where it’s going. You’ve been warned.

I was friends with a dude in high school whose last name was Durbin. Of course we called him Dirty Durb. He was a nice guy and wasn’t dirty in any sense of the word, but if your last name is Durbin, those are the rules.

As I’m not originally from Connecticut, I have no idea if the town of Derby is known as The Dirty Derb, but I strongly assume it is. And frankly, after cycling the Derby Greenway across Hog Island, I will forever call it The Dirty Derb.

That part of Derby is stinky and dirty. But after driving through the neighborhoods of East Derby, I found a whole other reason to stick the tiny town with the Dirty Derb moniker.

Now, there are Sodom Roads all over Connecticut. All of Puritan New England, actually. That’s no big deal and wouldn’t warrant a CTMQ page on its own. But you can’t tell me the town’s Planning and Zoning Department didn’t do this on purpose…

Starting from bottom right, Sodom and Hine(y). Sodom and Krak(ow). Sodom and Shag(bark). And finally, the best of all, Sodom Lane and John Street.

If I was a pimp, I would buy the house at the corner of Sodom and John. I just would. I’d put it on my pimp calling card. “At the corner of Sodom and John in The Dirty Derb.”

I’d be the King of the Pimps.

A boy can dream.
