Don’t Blow It
Eaton/Dix Intersection, West Haven
November 2024
***Warning!*** Not the usual CTMQ content. You can guess from the title of the page where it’s going. You’ve been warned.
My wife and I used to always take at least one day off from work together to “go do stuff” on or near one of our fall birthdays. And by “stuff,” I mean CTMQ stuff.
Hoang would always leave the day’s planning and itinerary up to me, and she’d gamely go along with whatever I had in store. We’ve always had fun doing this, but hadn’t done it for several years leading up until 2024.
I had a bunch of places on my loose list of things to see and do, but one stood out. I built the whole day around one, and really only cared about that one.
This is that one.
And I’m sure you understand why.
It’s not every day you join your wife at Eaton/Dix.
With Hoang as navigator, we first went to Dee’s.
“Dee’s what,” she asked innocently…
“DeeS… treet,” I said.
As I drove the suburban neighborhood trying to find THE cross street, I left the route in Hoang’s capable hands. But she missed to turn onto Eaton…
I wasn’t upset. How could I be, considering where we were headed. She had me take a left to hit Dix…
But I just couldn’t turn to Dix and kept going onward on my route. “Just don’t blow it,” I said. I finally was able to curve around the tip and head back down…
Until we found Dix and took a ride on it.
I was wildly disappointed when I thought I was there only to find the Dix sign was missing. I crawled through the intersection of Dix/Eaton and my wife, who is more familiar with such things, turned back into the glare of the sun and yelped, “there it is! There’s Eaton/Dix!”
You’d think it would be pretty obvious, right out there in public, but we almost missed it. I pulled over, we hopped out, took our pictures, and went on our merry way.
And then we talked about our experience for WAAAYYY too long.
Do you think the person who lives at that intersection tells their friends, “I’m right at the corner of Eaton/Dix or Dix/Eaton?” Or, “after riding on Dix, get to Eaton.” Or, “Once your done Eaton, slip onto Dix.”
I’m 52. Hoang is 51.
We have fun.
