Mattatuck Trail Intro

Mattatuck Trail
Wolcott to Cornwall, ~42 miles

December 2022 –

The CFPA’s Mattatuck Trail is a bit of a mess. A really cool mess, but a mess nonetheless. It has a break in the middle of it between White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield and the south end of the Shepaug Reservoir in Warren. It traverses the ridge above Mohawk Mountain Ski Area which may surprise some (since the Mattatuck ends at the Mohawk Trail north of the ski mountain). There is a trail in that gap on Prospect Mountain in Litchfield, and it used to be part of the Mattatuck… but is no longer.

The Mad River, Wolcott

Wolcott to Cornwall sounds incredibly far, but it’s not on a map. It certainly is when one thinks of the political and socioeconomic differences between those two towns, but we’re just here to hike, not to conduct a sociology study. There are a few fake caves, a very famous cave, some nice waterfalls, Black Rock State Park, the aforementioned White Memorial Conservation Center, and some other really cool spots along the way.

Let’s get to it.

Section 1: Peterson Park to Keegan Road, Wolcott & Plymouth
Section 2: Keegan Road to Bidwell Hill Road, Plymouth, Thomaston, & Watertown
Section 3: Bidwell Hill Road to Slab Meadow Hill Road, Watertown & Morris
Section 4: Slab Meadow Hill Road to White Memorial Conservation Center, Morris & Litchfield
Section 5: TBD
