What a Dumb Name for a River Still River Cascades Winchester (Winsted) Seriously, "Still River?" That literally makes no sense. Especially when we're talking about some roarin' cascade action up in here. Just look at these bad boys: Oooh yeahhhh... The Still River is a medium-sized stream which rises … [Read more...]

Wordplay (2006)
Word Up Wordplay, 2006 Full disclosure: I'm a New York Times crossword fanboy and have been for decades. Therefore, any halfway decent movie featuring the NYT crossword will be considered excellent by me. That reminds me of an old beer review I wrote about a beer called “Blanc de Blanche" by Overshores Brewing. … [Read more...]
Bristol Boys (2006)
Bristol Deserves Better Bristol Boys, 2006 Which one of you said I should review Connecticut movies? Because whoever you are, your suggestion then led to a friend making me aware of the 2006 independent film, Bristol Boys. And now I’m just mad at you all. Because this movie suuuuuuuuuuucks. The whole … [Read more...]
Book Review: Traveler’s Guide to Western New England and the CT River Valley
No One Cares About the Gold Coast Anyway Traveler's Guide to Western New England and the CT River Valley Tim Mulligan, 1994 This review completely ignores the non-Connecticut portion of the book. It is absurd to review a travel guide from 1994 for all the obvious reasons. This book was published just before … [Read more...]
The Women (2008)
Nope The Women, 2008 When I began formalizing my list of Connecticut movies, I had to leave off a ton of pre-1950 or so options - simply because there's no way I can find them to watch. You'd probably be surprised at how many old movies take place in Connecticut. The Women is a poorly conceived 2008 remake … [Read more...]
The Quiet (2005)
Shhhhh The Quiet, 2005 You’ve likely never seen The Quiet, nor have you likely even heard of it. It did have a national theater release and it wasn’t universally panned, but The Quiet was just a quiet little movie. It’s also very disturbing on a few different levels and most importantly for us, the whole thing … [Read more...]
266. Tourtellotte Memorial Room Museum
Nice $&^$! Museum... #$&$! Thompson (Google Maps location) May 28, 2014 I apologize for my crude title, but it's just very hard for me to say "Tourtellote" without thinking of Tourettes Syndrome. As a parent of a special needs child with very different, but similarly debilitating behaviors, I'm not making fun of … [Read more...]
CT Books, Movies, People, & Stories (Archived)
Connecticut Books, People, & Essays Note: This section of CTMQ has been archived and will not be added to anymore. I probably shouldn’t have ever begun reading and writing about Connecticut books. It’s just one of those lists that I can’t possibly “finish” in any meaningful way. But that’s fine, I don’t mind. If … [Read more...]
Oil City Dam
Snake Oil Oil City at Rainbow Reservoir, Windsor There is a lot going on at Northwest Park in Windsor. Today, you can find all sorts of stuff from a little nature museum to a tobacco history museum to a dozen miles of trails and more. And stuff has been happening here for a long time. I don’t typically … [Read more...]
Book Review: Connecticut River From the Air
The Connecticut River from the Air: An Intimate Perspective of New England by Jerry Roberts (Author), Tom Walsh (Photographer) This is a beautiful book. As your friendly expert on Connecticut coffee table books, I’m pleased to report that this is one of the best. Not only are the many hundreds of photographs … [Read more...]
