Best, Unique, & Historic Restaurants, Bars, & Foods

June 8, 2009 by Steve 7 Comments

Food, Glorious Food!
CT’s Best, Unique, & Historic Restaurants & Food

It’s completely ridiculous how much time and effort I’ve put into creating this page. I won’t burden you with my woes, but suffice it to say that this has been 15 years in the making. There’s a lot here, and restaurants are always opening and closing – more the latter since the pandemic – so please bear with me. I’ve finally settled on what to include (and what not to include) and I’m comfortable with the major sections below. Let’s eat!

Roadfood’s “Eat Before You Die” lists
1,000 Places to See Before You Die in the USA list
CTMQ’s Unique & Historic Restaurants Bars, and Food
CTMQ’s CT Restaurant Tour of the World

Roadfood’s Eat Before You Die Lists

Jane and Michael Stern used to both live in Connecticut when they were married. They’ve pumped out a mini library of food travel books and owing to them being locals, I decided to try to eat all of their recommended items in two of their books: 2009’s 500 Things to Eat Before It’s Too Late and 2017’s An Eater’s Guide to More Than 1,000 of the Best Local Hot Spots and Hidden Gems Across America. Olde Timey Soda Makers & Bottlers

I never was much of a soda drinker, as it was only consumed as a “treat” in my childhood home. Maybe at weekend lunches or football games. But my wife Hoang was a different sort. The girl loved her Diet Coke. Then one day in 2015 or so, she decided she drank too much of it and stopped cold turkey. And that was that. We rarely have any soda in the house these days, but when we do, it’s usually from one of Connecticut’s small companies. Let’s visit them and see what’s stirring.

Castle Beverages, Ansonia
Foxon Park Beverages, East Haven
Hosmer Mountain Soda, Manchester and Windham
Avery’s Beverages, New Britain

    Hello:

It is nice to find a fellow forager & foodie in CT, though maybe not my end (New London County). So comments on this page:

-I’m not far from Flanders Fish Market, but don’t really see how their chowder is special. Do you rate it higher than all others you’ve had?
    -Custy’s is closed.
-Pepe’s now has a Mohegan Sun Casino location, in case you’re ever by there (another place in my county). However, I personally prefer Ocean Pizza, especially w/eggplant, artichoke, & portabella mushrooms on top.

Let me know next time you’re coming to my area, and we can meet up, eitehr the two of us or our families.

Meanwhile, to get more ideas on cooking w/foraged foods and what’s avail. in CT for foraging, check out my site.

Lastly, how’ve you done w/finding morels in CT?

Found an old FOXON soda bottle on West Haven Beach.
The bottle is embossed, but most of the lettering has been lettering has been destroyed.
There is a portion of a photo of a large strawberry above the lettering
    ” STRAWBERRY”
in white lettering with black “shadowing”.
I would like to know the year(s) that this style bottle was made by FOXON . I love researching history of old bottles.
I would greatly appreciate any information on this vintage bottle so that I can post it on beach metal detecting forum facebook.
On the base is marked “S6”
    Thank you,
    Lorraine

Wow! You culled the CT locations from various books/lists? Very impressive. That’s something I’d do, but I haven’t made any of my research available to the online world. The attempt to list a food option from every country is something similar to my informal effort to try food from every country. I might be able to offer assistance on CT options.
